1. Kartik Calling Kartik
Kartik Calling Kartik is a psychological thriller which released in 2010. This Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar starring film was about a man who is shy, introverted, and almost invisible to most of his colleagues. He has a crush on his colleague, but she seems out of his league. One day he gets a call from his alter ego and his life changes for better, only to get worse later on. In the climax, it is revealed that Kartik had a brother who died at a young age— which affected his mental health and he is suffering from schizophrenia. The ending was quite shocking and many of us had little idea about such a mental disorder.
2. Talaash
Talaash is a 2012 mystery thriller that featured Amir Khan in the role of a diligent police officer who is trying to solve a high-profile murder case— some of whom are either lost or getting murdered one by one. Who is behind all this? He is confused. But, one day, while on his way to find more clues— he meets Simran, a prostitute who roams around the same street where the murder happened. She helps him find a way to solve the case. Everything seems normal until the end when it is revealed that Simran is a ghost! A supernatural angle came as a shock in a murder mystery and totally unexpected.
3. Iratta
A gripping Malayalam crime thriller movie that will shake you inside out. The film featuring Mammootty in the double role of twin brothers is seen as the lead. One is a recovered alcoholic whose wife had left him with their newborn daughter many years ago. The second of the twins is a corrupt police officer who is an alcoholic and a womanizer. When one of them gets the chance to solve the case of the corrupt officer missing, he finds a lot of theories, only to get shaken by reality. His twin brother had raped a 17-year-old girl in a lodge— who he later comes to know, was his niece— and therefore commits suicide.
4. Don
Don is an action crime thriller and a remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer superhit film by the same name. The movie was released in 2006 and pretty much took everyone’s attention because it was the remake of Big B’s film and people wanted to know how Shah Rukh Khan plays the same role. The movie is about a ruthless gangster who is a wanted criminal. When police find his doppelganger, they decide to place him inside his world to know all about him and catch him. The plan works and the criminal is caught. Only in the end, the movie shocks you when you realize that the one who died was the innocent doppelganger, and the gangster has instead, taken his place and played his part to fool the authorities!
5. Kahaani
A 2012 mystery thriller, starring Vidya Balan, is about a pregnant Bidya who is traveling from London to Kolkata to find the whereabouts of her missing husband. She finds a friend in a police officer who takes her case. Together, they roam the tiny lanes of Kolkata to solve the case. However, in the end, the secret is revealed that Bidya faked her pregnancy and she did all this to take revenge on her husband’s murderers. That one secret blows our minds! Many of us didn’t see that coming and that sure was such a smart climax in a suspense thriller film.
6. Gargi
This 2022 legal thriller drama movie paints a grim picture of our society that works on emotions and preconceived notions. It shows a school teacher taking up her father’s case to prove his innocence when he is found guilty of raping a 9-year-old girl. He was the guard in a building where the girl was gang-raped. Four culprits were already behind bars, her father was identified as the fifth accused. The end will shock you when it is revealed that Gargi’s hero, her father was an accused and she decides to hand him over to the court. This movie raises many questions and also explains the reason why the justice system works on logic rather than emotions.
7. Andhadhun
We all loved watching this film. It was funny and mysterious, and all the characters seemed suspenseful from the start. The movie starts on a light note, showing Ayushman’s character acting like a blind pianist just to gain more perspective as a musician. However, when he goes to a house finds a murder happening in front of him, but he can’t say anything because he is blind— it’s insane! And, we are left more shocked when the murderer goes to his house and plays tricks to somehow really turn him blind! The ending has been kept open and that’s what is so shocking and people still make theories to this day.
8. Kaun?
Kaun? is a 1999 suspense thriller that had no songs, no change of locations, no flashy clothes, and only a limited number of actors— a bold step to take in the 90s. But, Ram Gopal Verma was the director, and Anurag Kashyap wrote the script— so, you know anything is possible. It shows a married woman or better say Mrs. Malhotra living alone in a big mansion and there is also an announcement on TV that there is a serial killer on the loose. While she is trying to talk to her family on the phone, a stranger knocks on her door. But, the ending shows the woman calling herself as ‘Mrs. Malhotra’ kills everyone who enters the house.
9. Ugly
An Anurag Kashyap directorial it is, so you need to embrace a bit of dark reality here. This mystery crime thriller shows an unhappy married couple on the verge of divorce. Their 10-year-old girl gets kidnapped, and the rest of the characters including these two fall under suspicion as everybody has a motive. However, in the end, it is revealed that a toy seller who died in a road accident had kidnapped and hidden her. And, her body was found dead and decaying, a week later.
10. Dia
Dia is a rom-com that will give you trauma for a lifetime ngl! The movie starts with Dia having a crush on his college senior Rahul. And, they end up in a beautiful relationship until Rohit dies in an accident. Already going through depression, Dia meets Adi and they develop a friendship. However, later on, she finds out that Rohit is alive but is in a coma for a long time. And, in the end— Dia witnesses Rohit in a train accident. Don’t watch with the expectation of a happy ending.
We don’t watch a movie with a twist every day. But, sometimes, watching it is worth the experience and the thrill you get is nothing less than a roller coaster ride.
